#4 "My best friend had become my worst enemy" (53) Nola
After Junior tells Rowdy that he is going to Reardan, he is talking to the reader. This quote is significant because it shows how his relationship with his best friend changed so fast. At first Rowdy would do anything to protect Junior. He cared a lot about Juniors safety and was always looking out for him. That all changed after he told Rowdy that he was switching schools to go to Reardan. He thought that Junior felt as if he was better than him and he could do better than being with Rowdy all the time. With one conversation, Rowdy switched to hating Junior and being one of the many people that beat him up.
I agree totally. At first Rowdy was Junior's best friend and protector who would anything for him. Then after he tells him that he is transferring to Reardan, Rowdy attacks him. It feels to Junior that Rowdy has abandoned him as a friend. I also think that now Rowdy holds a grudge against Junior and that is where the quote "My best friend has become my worst enemy" (53)
ReplyDeleteI agree. When Junior told Rowdy that he was switching schools, Rowdy realized that Junior wasn't going to be in his life as much, because they would be at different schools so, they wouldn't see each other as much. Mr P. said " ' He doesn't hurt you because you're the only good thing in his life. He doesn't want to give that up. It's the only thing he hasn't given up' " (42). Since Rowdy realized that Junior wasn't going to be in his life anymore, he decided that he could hurt him and he didn't have to protect him anymore.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Junior is the one pleasant and positive thing in Rowdy's life, and because Rowdy has had such a traumatic and scary life with a childhood of repression, when Rowdy realizes that Junior is going to leave him, he feels anger and it shows through in this situation. "For the first time he saw that I was serious, but he didn't want me to be serious" (Alexie 51).
